Critics consensus
Sublime direction from Hitchcock, and terrific central performances from Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant make this a bona-fide classic worthy of a re-visit.
What resonated with audiences
'Notorious' showcases Hitchcock's masterful direction through stunning cinematography, innovative camera work, and expertly crafted suspense that builds unbearable tension. Bergman, Grant, and Rains deliver excellent performances with undeniable chemistry, while the psychologically complex characters and romantic elements create an intensely erotic love story. Some found the screenplay lacking humor and sparkle, with a few noting the film didn't fully engage them or achieve its potential despite its technical brilliance.
